Sasol GTC Racing Team in tense title fight at season finale

Sandton, South Africa – Gennaro Bonafede heads into the final round of the Sasol GTC Championship on Saturday, 20th October with a mathematical chance of snatching the title and to this end, the Sasol GTC Racing Team is pulling out all the stops to give their driver the machine he needs.

After eight rounds across South Africa, in which Bonafede has claimed four victories and five podiums, he currently lies third on the points log with his sights set firmly on the runner-up position where he needs to score five more points than Simon Moss (Audi). Realistically, the overall title will need a dose of good luck for the #32 BMW driver to prevail.

“I’m looking forward to ending the season on a high note,” said Bonafede. “Whichever way the championship goes, ending the year with a win will be a great result for the team which has worked so hard all year. Throughout the year I thought I would be much closer in the title chase and led the points standings on two occasions, but the last two races didn’t go my way for a variety of reasons. I always look forward to racing at Zwartkops and meeting our fans during the day.”

Robert Wolk has had a challenging season in the second Sasol BMW GTC racing car. He scored two podiums in Cape Town and East London, and he too, would like to close his season on a high note.

“The team has worked incredibly hard to resolve the issues I’ve had during the season, which mainly centred on a handling imbalance. Racing at Zwartkops excites me as the competition is always fierce. I may yet be able to spring a surprise before the final chequered flag falls which will be a great way to wrap up the year.”

Team Manager Vic Maharaj said: “The team has pushed hard to field two very competitive cars for Gennaro and Robbie to race at Zwartkops. While winning the championship may be an unrealistic goal, we want to entertain the crowd with a good show and end our season strongly. The team always gives its best effort and the last round will be no different. I am confident we will be in the mix right to the very end.”

Qualifying gets underway at 08h40 on Saturday morning, followed by the Grid Walk at 12h00. Fans can join the cars and drivers on the track ahead of the first 12-lap race which takes place at 12h10.

The final race of the season is scheduled to start at 15.35.
