Sasol GTC Racing Team aiming high at Kyalami

After a perfect start to the Sasol GTC Championship in Cape Town last month, the Sasol GTC Racing Team is quietly confident of another top-drawer performance at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday, 22nd April.

Gennaro Bonafede had a great outing when the GTC teams first visited the revamped circuit last October, taking both victories, both pole position bonus points as well as setting the fastest race lap in one of the heats.  With a handy 34 point championship lead at this early stage of the 2017 season, Bonafede has now become the benchmark – and the target – for the rest of the teams.

“Michael (Stephen) and Simon (Moss) have been testing extensively and will come at me with everything they have got”, Bonafede cautioned.  “I would love to repeat what I achieved last year at Kyalami but I’m taking things one race at a time and not making any rash predictions.  Kyalami is only two of nine races in the Sasol GTC championship.  If I have the car hooked up early,  I will maximize the opportunity to bank as many points as I can because somewhere during the year it just won’t be my day”.

Bonafede added: “I really love Kyalami with its fast and flowing corners.  A fast lap there is very rewarding as you are at one with the car and can maintain a fast pace without the effort feeling laborious.

Team newcomer Robert Wolk’s first race last month at Killarney was curtailed due to overheating challenges. The Sasol GTC Racing Team scheduled a lot of track time leading up to the Kyalami race, allowing Wolk, a multiple single-seater champion racing driver, to settle in his “new” cockpit.

Mother Nature had different ideas though as two tests were washed out. “The BMW GTC car has phenomenal brakes and great handling.  “Kyalami is a beautiful facility and I’m looking forward to racing there for the first time”.

Team Manager, Vic Maharaj knows his team is ready to do battle with the cream of South Africa’s racing talent: “Our strategy is to have a clean weekend and maximize our opportunities.  We have arguably the best prepared cars and Gennaro is at the top of his game.  .  I hope our test sessions the past month will support Robert’s settling-in phase in a GTC race car and bear the intended fruits”.
